Fiat Yamaha have refused to be drawn into a public battle with Honda for the services of Jorge Lorenzo.
Honda have emerged as a possible destination for Lorenzo in 2010 after talks were reportedly held between the Japanese manufacturer and the Spaniard at Laguna Seca last weekend.
Lorenzo has become one of the star names in the FIM MotoGP World Championship since making his debut in the series last year, with the 22-year-old proving more than a match for team-mate Valentino Rossi, whom he trails in this year’s riders’ championship by nine points after eight rounds.
While Yamaha are reluctant to part with Lorenzo, team boss Masao Furusawa insists the manufacturer will not break the bank to secure his services for the future.
“We are interested in Jorge,” Furusawa told Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“We are in talks but we know about Honda’s offer. If he wants to go with them, we won’t be raising our stakes in order to retain him.”
